Nigeria’s Ex-Terrorists Seek New Lives After Vocational Training
Hundreds of former terrorists in Nigeria are beginning a new chapter in their lives after successfully completing a vocational training and rehabilitation programme in Borno State.
The initiative, designed to support the reintegration of repentant insurgents into society, provides participants with practical skills aimed at helping them become self-reliant and productive members of their communities. The programme includes training in various trades and vocational fields, equipping beneficiaries with the tools needed to earn a legitimate livelihood.
Authorities say the rehabilitation effort is part of a broader strategy to promote peace and stability in the North-East region, which has been heavily affected by years of insurgency and violence. Upon completing their training, many of the participants received starter packs and equipment to help them establish small businesses and begin new careers.
Supporters of the programme believe that rehabilitation and reintegration can play a key role in reducing insecurity by giving former fighters an opportunity to rebuild their lives away from violence. However, the initiative has also sparked debate among Nigerians, with some citizens expressing concerns about the return of former insurgents into communities that suffered greatly during the conflict.
Despite the mixed reactions, officials insist that participants undergo screening, counselling, and rehabilitation before being considered for reintegration.
The development marks another step in Nigeria's ongoing efforts to address the long-term effects of insurgency while creating pathways for peace, reconciliation, and economic empowerment.
